Beginner Volleyball Lessons
For a child who is new to volleyball, start by comparing programs designed to teach the fundamentals. The main distinction here is between an age-group learn-to-play environment and focused lessons in a smaller group.
Spikes Learn-to-Play
Grades 1–6 · Boys and girls · Beginners
An age-group introduction to volleyball, with age-appropriate instruction, activities and modified games. Children are separated by age. For younger players, this is a place to build the basics before considering league play.
Starting level: No previous volleyball experience is required.
Technique Tutoring
Grades 6–12 · Boys and girls · Beginner small-group lessons
Focused lessons for older beginners and players who learn well in a smaller group. Classes have a maximum of six players, allowing more repetitions and individual feedback.
Starting level: No previous volleyball experience is required.
Choosing for a Grade 6 Beginner?
Compare the learning environment: Spikes offers age-group learn-to-play activities, while Technique Tutoring provides smaller-group instruction. Review the available classes and ask Pakmen for guidance when placement is unclear.
Youth Volleyball Leagues
League programs differ in both the experience they expect and how much time they devote to instruction versus games. Choose the level first, then decide which format suits your child.
Development League
Grades 5–12 · Introductory league · Session groupings vary
Build the connection between learning a skill and using it in a game. Sessions combine 45 minutes of instruction and drills with structured game play.
Entry guidance by grade:
Grades 5–6: Complete Spikes with a Silver Certificate Medal, or receive a recommendation from the Spikes coach in the “What’s Next?” report.
Grades 7–8: Previous basic experience is recommended, such as Technique Tutoring, one or two seasons of Spikes, or a comparable program.
Grades 9–12: Previous program participation or some volleyball experience is expected. Completely new players are advised to take a season of Technique Tutoring first.
Some sessions combine older grades. Check the exact grade group before registering.
Champions League
Grades 5–12 in separate groups · Intermediate · Previous experience required
Choose this when your child is ready for competition and still wants a substantial coaching component. Each session starts with 45 minutes of instruction and drills, followed by games.
Experience matters: Pakmen identifies roughly three seasons of Development League, school-team experience or comparable volleyball experience as suitable preparation. Review the requirements for the selected grade group.
Middle School Volleyball League
Grades 7–8 · Intermediate and advanced · Experienced players
A more game-focused option for middle-school players who can already take part in organized competition. Sessions begin with 20–30 minutes of warm-up and skill refinement before organized games.
Previous experience required: This program is not for beginners. School-team play or participation in a comparable experienced-player program can provide the relevant background.
High School Volleyball League
Grades 9–12 · Intermediate and advanced · Experienced players
For high-school players who want to spend more of the session playing organized games. A 20–30 minute warm-up and skill-refinement period comes first, with the remaining time devoted to game play.
Previous experience required: This program is not for beginners. Meeting the grade range alone does not establish readiness.
Champions League or a School-Age League?
Champions League devotes more time to instruction and drills. Middle School and High School leagues put greater emphasis on organized game play after a shorter warm-up and skill-refinement period. Choose according to your child’s experience and the balance of coaching and games they need.
Training for School-Team and Advanced Players
Players who already compete on a school team may need a different balance of technical training and competition. Compare the options below and review the experience requirements before registering.
Pakmen Plus
Boys · Grades 5–12 in grade groups · Advanced
Advanced skill development followed by organized games, for experienced boys who are ready to train and compete with skilled peers. Check the available grade group for the selected session.
Entry requirement: For Grades 5–6, school-team experience or promotion by a Pakmen coach. For Grades 7–12, players must be school-team members or have been promoted by a Pakmen coach.
GTA Premier League
Girls · Grades 5–6, 7–8 and 9–12 groups · Advanced
Advanced technical training combined with structured competition. This is an option for experienced girls seeking a stronger level of training and game play, with Mississauga sessions offered by grade group.
Entry requirement: School-team volleyball experience is required unless the player has been promoted by a Pakmen coach.
School Team Athlete Training Program
School-team players · Grades 7–8 and 9–12 Mississauga groups
The School Team Athlete Training Program focuses on individual skills through progressive drills and feedback. Choose it for focused technical development alongside players of similar ability, rather than a league centred on organized games.
Entry requirement: Players should have previous volleyball experience and currently play on a school volleyball team. Participation does not guarantee school-team or rep-team selection.
Pakmen Prospects
Girls · Skilled, advanced players
A further advanced-training option for girls who already have strong volleyball skills. Players should be starters on their school volleyball team at a minimum. Review the detailed skill-level requirements before registering.
Additional Ways to Learn and Play
Gettn' Better @ Serving & Spiking
Grades 6–12 · Focused skill instruction
Dedicated practice in serving and attacking, including serving mechanics, approach, timing and ball contact. Instruction is adapted to the player’s age, experience and ability. This is focused skill work rather than a general league.
Girls Competition Circuit
Girls · Grades 5–10 · Intermediate and advanced competition
A games-only competition option for girls who already train in an eligible Pakmen program. It adds organized competition alongside that training.
Concurrent enrolment required: Players must also be registered in an eligible program running at the same time, such as Champions League or GTA Premier League. Check the full eligible-program list and session requirements on Pakmen’s page. This is not a standalone beginner league.
Parents & Players Learn-to-Play
Children aged 6–12, participating alongside a parent · Learn-to-play
Learn volleyball together through physical activities and skill development. The parent and child work side by side on court.
Active parent participation: The parent takes part in the physical portion of each session, rather than attending only as a spectator.

Questions About Youth Volleyball
My child has never played. Where should we start?
Compare Spikes Learn-to-Play for Grades 1–6 and Technique Tutoring for Grades 6–12. Both welcome beginners without previous volleyball experience. Spikes uses age-group activities and modified games; Technique Tutoring offers lessons with a maximum of six players. Grade 6 beginners can compare both learning environments. Being old enough for an experienced-player league does not mean a new player is ready for it.
Does my child need to be on a school team?
Beginner lessons do not require school-team membership. Advanced programs have different entry rules: Pakmen Plus and GTA Premier League have school-team or Pakmen coach-promotion routes; School Team Athlete Training is for current school-team players; Pakmen Prospects expects girls to be school-team starters at a minimum. Review the specific program’s requirements.
What is the difference between lessons and leagues?
Lessons concentrate on learning or refining skills. Many leagues combine coaching with organized games, but the balance varies. Development and Champions leagues include 45 minutes of instruction and drills. Middle School and High School leagues are more game-focused, while Girls Competition Circuit is games only and requires concurrent enrolment in an eligible training program.
Are there programs for both boys and girls?
Yes. The overall selection includes options for both boys and girls, including Spikes and Technique Tutoring. Some programs are specifically for boys, such as Pakmen Plus, or for girls, such as GTA Premier League, Pakmen Prospects and Girls Competition Circuit. Participation formats can also vary by session, so check the selected listing.
Where do I find dates, prices and available spaces?
Use the button for the program you are considering. Its Pakmen page links to the current registration options, where you can check Mississauga locations, dates, fees and availability for the exact class or league group. Those details can change between registration periods.
What should I do when I am unsure of the level?
