What to look for in Volleyball shoes

  • July 27, 2015

Volleyball is a sport that requires endurance, athleticism, agility and quick feet. Being that players are on their feet and moving constantly, the right footwear can make all the difference. Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or expert level player, investing in good quality shoes is never a bad idea. Many volleyball players opt to wear sport-specific shoes, however, they are not always necessary.

Volleyball shoes vs. regular running shoes

Something that many people often wonder is if there’s a large difference (or any at all) between shoes that are said to be specifically made for volleyball, and regular running/athletic shoes. The answer is yes.

Volleyball shoes are made to better withstand and handle the movements of the game. Unlike regular running shoes, volleyball shoes are made with gum rubber soles, which allow for much better traction on the court. This specific sole is made for quick movements, and frequent starts and stops. Regular runners are designed for mostly forward motions such as running or walking.

Good quality volleyball shoes are much lighter than your traditional athletic shoes. This allows the player to be faster and more agile. The shoes are made with materials like synthetic leather and mesh to allow for a lighter shoe, and also provide better air circulation.

Can I use regular running shoes?

Although volleyball shoes are designed specifically for use on the court, your regular runners are just fine as well. You may not get the same traction or light-weight luxury, but they will still serve their purpose. So, the short answer: yes. Regular athletic/running shoes are fine. This can especially be the case if you (or your child) are new to the sport. After all, you can always decide whether or not you’d like to purchase special shoes after you know you will get good use out of them.

What kind/brand should I choose?

The best style and brand of the shoe depends on the athlete wearing them. Different players prefer different styles, and are accustomed to different brands. The two most popular brands are Asics and Mizuno. Both offer different styles in terms of rises (low, mid, high) and a variety of colours including solids, neons, and your traditional black and white. The two brands both feature shoes in several price-points, so you’re sure to find something that’s within your budget.

Whether you opt for a volleyball-specific shoe or a regular running shoe, the most important feature is comfort. Make sure the shoe you choose will be comfortable for you to wear. Be sure to try them on, walk around in them and ask the sales associate for recommendations.
